In Kiltartan National School the Strand of the P.E. Curriculum: Gymnastics is taught by a specialised Gymnastics teacher over six weeks. The children develop skills such as body control, co-ordination and strength in a fun and enjoyable manner.
The children of all class levels in Kiltartan National School benefit from classes with a specialised Hip Hop teacher over six weeks. The children develop their physical fitness, ability to express themselves through dance and self-confidence with each new routine they practice and master.
Each year Kiltartan National School takes part in the Galway Primary Schools Cross Country Championships.
Kiltartan National School has a Gaelic Football, Hurling and Camogie team. Our most recent success was this October when our 6th class boys & girls Gaelic Football Team won the Garda 7 a-side Football Blitz.
Kiltartan National School fosters a love for music through the National Arts Education Curriculum. Kiltartan National School has a school choir who shine at events throughout the year. This year 3rd, 4th, 5th and 6th class will partake in the Peace Proms. The Peace proms is organised by the CBOI (Cross Border Orchestra of Ireland). The children will participate in one choral workshop, a rehearsal on the day of the concert with the orchestra and of course the concluding concert. The Peace Proms is set to be an enriching and exciting opportunity for the children involved.
In Kiltartan National School Visual Arts is upheld as an immensely important aspect of the National Curriculum. The children are supported to explore their artistic ability and expression across the five strands: Drawing, Paint and colour, Print, Clay, Construction, Fabric and fibre. Our school walls are a canvas of beautiful murals that aim to inspire and uplift.
Children develop their command and confidence ‘as Gailege’ through speaking, listening, reading and writing activities in daily lessons, through games, stories and music. An emphasis is placed on the use of oral Irish in Kiltartan National School mar ‘Beatha teanga í a labhairt’. Each year Kiltartan National School has a ‘Seachtain na Gaeilge’ to promote and celebrate the Irish language. One highlight from last years ‘Seachtain na Gaeilge’ was a large outdoor Céilí with all classes coming together to perform traditional Irish set dances.

In Kiltartan National School the five strands of the Mathematics Curriculum: Number, Algebra, Shape and space, Measures, Data are taught systematically. Discussion, hands-on experience with materials, and active learning are encouraged as well as the development of mathematical language to share ideas and thinking. Each year the children take part in Maths week which is held in October.
Our Senior Classes participate in swimming lessons ever year. During these lessons pupils receive expert instruction under the supervision of trained coaches. It is our aim to support the children in Kiltartan National School to acquire the life skill of swimming, gain confidence in the water and have fun.
Aistear is an important aspect of the learning and progression that takes place in Junior and Senior Infants. Aistear is a curriculum framework for children in Ireland. During Aistear the children implement their knowledge and apply/build upon this learning through games, activities and role plays of real-life situations. Aistear presents a multitude of benefits including the development of language, literacy, numeracy, social skills, confidence and fostering a love for learning.
In Kiltartan National School our classrooms are all equipped with Interactive Whiteboards. Our school also has access to laptops and two sets of iPads which are used to develop the children’s I.C.T skills, enhance and improve learning across the curriculum.
We are fortunate in Kiltartan National School to have a large grass area comprising of two small sports pitches as well as concrete areas for soccer and basketball. A playhouse, mud kitchen and large Connect Four Game foster the development of imaginative play and social skills on our infant yard.
Kiltartan National School is located just minutes from Coole Park. The rich history of Coole Park and the diversity of nature & wildlife present provides a powerful learning resource to our pupils and is regularly visited by class groups during the year. Kiltartan National School is also located close-by the award winning Kiltartan Gregory Museum. The Kiltartan Gregory Museum is a restored former schoolhouse dedicated to the memory of playwright Lady Augusta Gregory. Most recently, First to Fourth Class enjoyed an educational trip to the Kiltartan Gregory Museum in September.
We have a wonderful school garden space here in Kiltartan National School. We are looking forward to planting our school garden this year.
